02

Verbos modales

Los modales son auxiliares que se combinan con el infinitivo sin "to" del verbo principal (she can go, no "she can to go"). No cambian de forma según la persona (he can, no "he cans") y no usan el auxiliar "do" para preguntas o negaciones (Can you...?, no "Do you can...?").

ModalUsoEjemplo
canHabilidad, permiso informal, posibilidadShe can speak English. Can I sit here?
couldHabilidad en el pasado, petición cortés, posibilidadI could swim when I was five. Could you help me?
mayPermiso formal, posibilidadMay I come in? It may rain later.
mightPosibilidad (más incierta que may)It might rain later. She might be at home.
mustObligación fuerte, deducción lógica casi seguraYou must wear a seatbelt. He must be tired.
mustn'tProhibiciónYou mustn't smoke here.
should, shouldn'tConsejo, recomendación, expectativaYou should see a doctor. It shouldn't take long.
ought toConsejo o expectativa (similar a should, más formal)You ought to apologize.
willPredicción, decisión espontánea, promesaI will call you tonight.
wouldPetición cortés, hábito pasado, condicionalWould you like some tea? I would go if I had time.
shallSugerencias, ofrecimientos (uso formal, inglés británico)Shall we begin? Shall I open the window?
need (not)Necesidad, ausencia de necesidadYou needn't worry about it.
have to, has toObligación externa (no es un modal puro, pero funciona igual)I have to work on Saturday.
had betterConsejo urgente o advertenciaYou'd better hurry or you'll miss the bus.
used toHábito o estado en el pasado que ya no ocurreI used to live in Guayaquil.

05

Infinitivo vs. gerundio, y phrasal verbs

Algunos verbos van seguidos de infinitivo (to + verbo base), otros de gerundio (verbo + -ing), y algunos aceptan ambos, a veces con cambio de significado. No hay una regla única; se aprende verbo por verbo, con la práctica.

+ infinitivo: want to, decide to, plan to, hope to, need to, agree to (She wants to travel.)

+ gerundio: enjoy, finish, avoid, suggest, consider, mind, keep (She enjoys traveling.)

look for (buscar), give up (rendirse), turn on, off (encender, apagar), find out (descubrir), get up (levantarse), run out of (quedarse sin algo)

06

Voz pasiva, condicionales y estilo indirecto

Voz pasiva: se forma con be (en el tiempo que corresponda) + participio pasado (V3), y se usa cuando el interés está en la acción o en quien la recibe, más que en quien la realiza.

Presente simple pasivo: The reports are written every month.

Pasado simple pasivo: The house was built in 1990.

Presente perfecto pasivo: The letter has been sent.

Oraciones condicionales: combinan una cláusula con "if" y una cláusula principal, cada una en un tiempo verbal específico según el grado de realidad o hipótesis.

TipoEstructuraUsoEjemplo
Cero (Zero)If + presente simple, presente simpleVerdades generales, hechos científicosIf you heat ice, it melts.
Primero (First)If + presente simple, will + infinitivoSituación futura real o probableIf it rains, I will stay home.
Segundo (Second)If + pasado simple, would + infinitivoSituación hipotética o improbable en el presente, futuroIf I had more time, I would travel more.
Tercero (Third)If + pasado perfecto, would have + V3Situación hipotética en el pasado (irreal)If I had studied, I would have passed.

Estilo indirecto (Reported Speech): al reportar lo que otra persona dijo, el tiempo verbal generalmente retrocede un paso (backshift): presente simple → pasado simple; presente perfecto → pasado perfecto; will → would.

Directo: "I work here," she said. → Indirecto: She said (that) she worked there.
